The Institute for Cellular Medicine (ICM) www.cellmedicine.com
It’s never an immediate comfort you feel when you consider traveling to another country to place the well-being of your child in the hands of doctors outside of our U.S. medical community. However, when your child is in need of aggressive treatment not yet FDA approved in the U.S. you must, in some way, find the courage to reach out and explore opportunities beyond the boundaries of your own country. The Institute for Cellular Medicine (ICM) is one such opportunity that we found comfort with in San Jose, Costa Rica, almost immediately.
Now, with two trips to ICM and two transplants behind us, we can tell you that our trust in their organization is one hundred percent. Their facility is state of the art, the doctors are caring, sensitive, informative, and most of all, extremely good at what they do. We have taken Kevin to some of the top hospitals and labs in the world - Johns Hopkins, University of Utah, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children & Women, Texas Children’s Hospital, and The Royal Hospital of London to name a few – and ICM is second to none. At every step of the transplant, the staff and doctors at ICM are there to lend an understanding ear, explain each procedure, insure medical accuracy by authenticating every step of the process, all the while demonstrating total sensitivity to your child’s every need.
As an organization, ICM is extremely committed to the exclusive use of non-embryonic stem cells harvested from the umbilical cords of successful births –umbilical cords that would otherwise be treated as medical waste. To validate that commitment, ICM is completely open to communicating all facets of the transplant process and offer tours of the lab to make sure patient families are completely at ease with their transplant decision. The entire ICM staff are empathetic and compassionate and have great respect for your anxieties, fears, and concerns.
ICM also provides transportation and an interpreter during your entire stay in Costa Rica. They are available to you 24/7. Don’t be surprised if your guide becomes a great friend by the time you are ready to leave for home.
ICM has now been approved by NTAF – National Transplant Assistance Fund – a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that receives tax-deductible contributions on behalf of patients who visit for stem cell transplants. NTAF insures accountability that all contributions are used according to their original intent. Many of the families visiting ICM are doing so without insurance coverage, so funds received from NTAF are critical to insure that each patient gets the treatment they need.
We truly believe God brought us through the first 12 years of treatments and therapies to bring us to this point. He led us to Costa Rica for a reason (read our journal for all the details). We believe it is our ministry to share Kevin’s story and ICM agrees! They have shared our phone numbers and email addresses with all new prospective transplant recipients. There are so many families being led to this procedure literally all over the world. We receive emails from Mexico to Panama to California to Florida to New York to Europe to Australia!!! With each family we are privileged to share with, we give God the glory and share God’s love and protection in this journey. The blessings are all ours! ICM called last month to see if I would allow them to send a professional camera crew to our home to interview me on the air about Kevin’s Journey! What an opportunity!
